Sync Licensing
Licensing your music for use in films, TV shows, advertisements, and video games — a major revenue stream.
What It Is
Sync licensing places your music in visual media — films, TV, ads, video games, trailers. It’s one of the highest-paying revenue streams for independent artists. A single national ad placement can earn more than a year of streaming. Music supervisors find tracks through libraries, publishers, and direct submissions.
How It Works
When a filmmaker, ad agency, or game developer wants to use a song, they need a sync license (for the composition) and a master use license (for the recording). Music supervisors search for tracks that fit the mood, tempo, and narrative of a scene. They browse sync libraries, receive pitches from publishers, and sometimes discover music organically. The fee is negotiated based on the media type, territory, duration, and prominence of the placement.
Who Does It Well
Artists who succeed in sync maintain organized catalogs with clean masters, available stems, and instrumental versions. In India, the ad music market is massive — brands regularly license independent music for campaigns. The growing Indian OTT market (Netflix India, Prime Video, Hotstar) is creating new sync opportunities for independent artists beyond the traditional Hindi film placement model.
For Musicians
Register with sync libraries (Musicbed, Artlist, Epidemic Sound) and music publishers who pitch for sync. Instrumental versions of your songs are more syncable. Keep masters clean and stems available. In India, brands like Coke, Zomato, and Swiggy regularly license independent music. Hindi film placements remain the holy grail but are largely composer-driven. The growing Indian OTT market (Netflix India, Prime Video, Hotstar) is creating new sync opportunities for independent artists.
