Live Booking
Securing and managing live performance opportunities — from local venues to festival stages and tours.
What It Is
Live booking is how musicians get on stages. At the indie level, it’s direct outreach to venue bookers, open mic nights, and local scene networking. At the professional level, booking agents handle negotiations, routing, and deal-making.
How It Works
Venues and festivals have bookers who curate their lineups based on audience fit, draw potential, and artistic merit. At the grassroots level, artists pitch directly with an EPK and demo links. As artists grow, booking agents take over — they maintain relationships with venues and promoters, negotiate fees, handle contracts, and route tours efficiently. The standard booking agent commission is 10-15% of the performance fee.
Who Does It Well
Artists who build strong live reputations get rebooked and recommended. In India, key venues include The Piano Man (Delhi), antiSOCIAL (Mumbai/Delhi/Bangalore), and The Humming Tree (Bangalore). Festivals like NH7 Weekender, Ziro, Magnetic Fields, and Bacardi Sessions are career-making stages. Artists who combine a strong live show with professional reliability build lasting relationships with promoters.
For Musicians
Build an EPK (electronic press kit) — bio, photos, music links, press quotes, live video, rider. Start local and build outward. Approach venues professionally — research who books the venue, send a concise email with links, suggest specific dates. Build relationships with promoters, not just bookers. A reliable artist who shows up on time, draws a crowd, and is professional backstage gets rebooked. Live income is still the most sustainable revenue stream for Indian independent artists.
