Release Planning
Strategically timing and sequencing singles, EPs, and albums to maximize impact, press, and listener engagement.
What It Is
Release planning is the timeline and sequence of putting music into the world. The modern playbook: lead single (6-8 weeks before album), second single (3-4 weeks out), album release, post-release singles to extend the cycle. Singles keep you in the algorithm; albums build artistic statements.
How It Works
A release plan coordinates every element of bringing music to market — distribution submission deadlines, editorial playlist pitch windows, social media teaser schedules, pre-save campaigns, music video drops, press outreach timelines, and live performance tie-ins. Each element is timed to build momentum toward release day and sustain engagement afterward.
Who Does It Well
Major label artists have entire teams dedicated to release planning, but independent artists who plan strategically can achieve outsized results. In India, festival calendars (NH7, Bacardi Sessions, YouTube FanFest) offer natural performance tie-ins for releases. Artists who coordinate releases with these cultural moments amplify their reach significantly.
For Musicians
Announce release dates at least 4 weeks in advance for editorial playlist consideration. Coordinate social media teasers, pre-save links, music video drops, and press outreach on a timeline. In India, avoid releasing on the same day as major Hindi film soundtracks or global pop stars. Friday is the global release day. Plan your entire year’s releases in January — even if details change, having a roadmap prevents reactive decisions.
